3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing is a specialty area of medical tattooing, which the Colour Clinic specializes in. This procedure requires advanced training, experience, and thorough knowledge in colour theory and pigment blending.
This procedure helps with the appearance of the breasts, improving self-esteem in both women and men who are in need of 3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing whether it be a congenital disorder or caused by surgery.
At the Colour Clinic, with 3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing, we can simulate the look of an areola with nipple protrusion after you have completed your breast reconstruction. It will minimize the appearance of scars, and restore your areola to a more natural looking colour and shape.
3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing may also be called Areola Repigmentation, Areola Micropigmentation, Areola Pigmentation, Areola Restoration, Areola Simulation, or Areola/Nipple Complex Tattooing.
How can 3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing Help Both Men and Women?
The areola is part of the breast in both women and men. It is an area of coloured skin around the nipple that is usually darker and thicker than the breast skin.
The areola plays a role in the aesthetic look of a breast. Since a person’s self-image can depend on the appearance of one’s breasts, a missing areola can affect people psychologically and they may not feel “complete” without an areola. Both women and men can become emotionally distressed, their self-esteem lowered by the appearance of a scarred or abnormal looking areola, which is simple to fix with 3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing.
3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing at the Colour Clinic provides the finishing touch after breast surgery. Clients feel the tattooing process helps them during the last phase of their recovery to look complete and feel good again.
What are the Main Causes of Areola Scarring?
Surgical procedures may create a scar if they require an incision at or near the edge of the areola. Some breast surgeries also create a vertical scar from the nipple through the lower portion of the breast that may need to be camouflaged.
The following are breast surgical procedures that may create a scar: Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty); Breast Augmentation or Enlargement (Augmentation Mammoplasty); Male Breast Reduction, and Breast Lift.
You may need one of the following Breast Tattooing Techniques:
1. 3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing: This procedure is for patients who have had breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Colour Clinic uses special cosmetic tattooing techniques and carefully blended pigment colours to simulate the appearance of a 3D Nipple & Areola with the illusion of actual nipple protrusion.
For a unilateral mastectomy patient (one breast), this tattooing process helps the reconstructed breast to match the natural breast. For patients with bilateral breast reconstruction (both breasts), both areolas are recreated as well as the nipple. A realistic looking areola and nipple can easily be achieved with a 3D Nipple & Areola Tattoo (with or without a nipple reconstructed by a surgeon).
2. Areola Scar Camouflage: Many breast operations require incisions around the outside of the areola which may produce scarring. The most common scars are from breast enlargement or reduction surgeries. A scar’s appearance can be softened, blended, or reduced by tattooing the areola scar using camouflage techniques, which the Colour Clinic specializes in.
3. Areola Size or Colour Adjustment: The colour of an areola can be darkened, balanced, or enhanced with tattooing. This procedure helps women who have discoloured or lightened areolas after breastfeeding or patients who have had areola graft surgery. Patients with skin discolouration disorders (e.g. Vitiligo) can also benefit from 3D Nipple & Areola tattooing. Also, many women and men who have not had breast surgery but are self-conscious about their areola colour or size (too light or too small) may choose this procedure to adjust their appearance.
How Long After Surgery Do I Need to Wait Before Having a 3D Nipple & Areola Tattoo?
3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing or scar camouflage can be performed when your physician approves it, which is usually 6 months after surgery. Once you have been approved by your surgeon for 3D Nipple & Areola Tattooing, you can schedule your appointment at the Colour Clinic with Marcie. During your appointment, she will discuss your concerns and recommend a treatment plan which will provide you with optimum results.
What do I need to know about Design, Colour & Spot Testing?
Marcie has a complete assortment of safe pigment colours which are made in Mississauga, Canada at the MicroPigmentation Centre. She will work with you and custom blend colours that will look the most natural for your skin tone.
For scar camouflage or unilateral areola recreation, she recommends a spot colour test before the actual procedure is performed.
A patient’s skin tone and body chemistry will affect the healed colour of their tattooed areas. Therefore, the spot test is the safest way to determine the formula for the closest colour match to an existing areola. The colour spot test is scheduled as an individual appointment with a fee. It should be completed 4 to 6 weeks before the actual tattooing procedure to allow for healing and colour stabilization.
Once the spot is healed and the colour evaluated, the areola tattooing sessions can be performed. Please be advised that a simulated or scarred areola will probably need more than one tattooing session to achieve the best looking result.
What about After My Procedure?
You will need to follow specific instructions for one week after each tattooing session. Marcie will provide you with an aftercare kit, which will include supplies and detailed instructions. Although you will not need to take time off from work, you should keep your recovery period and aftercare in mind when scheduling your tattooing appointments around work, social events, or vacation plans.
